I tried wrtitting about how sarah slean made me quiver when she sang vertigo in her hinduesque style of holding notes to the point of putting herself into a trance. how her breathy lyrics are sung so defined with a voice resembling the hollow softeness of a clarinet. the nature of her graceful upper torso convolutions and her whispy hair caressing the keys of her piano. she closes her eyes a makes a barrier between the music and the performance. the way she spuratically has theatrical explosions where her blueblue eyes, emphasised with blue eye shadow and blue sky, all radiate this unleashable energy that moves over the audience in the waves of her projected resonance. how her long ballads resemble a activity-filled day that flies by, feeling short. her drummer harmonized in an octave higher than her. and when asked how she felt about the performance that moved me to breathlesness, she responded with "the universe, it just wasn't right today". this is all i came up with.

IT wasn't until after i was done sulking over how dissapointed i was with buck65's performance that i realized that hillside isn't about competition or performing better then personal best. it is about exploration and self discovery by letting yourself be influenced by other artists. and at that moment, i was no longer dissapointed. i can understand the desire to change and collaborate and i am really happy that he felt confident enough to not be subjected to negative criticism by bringing this particular performance to guelph. in addition to his quirky facial and robotic body expressions, buck65 was accompanied by the lovely claire who diligently stood by his side in a comrade type relationship. there was also the addition a gangily, cross-dressing juggler who walked the stage like a cat walk causing the entire front row to burst in histarics. his workshop with sarah slean that morning bought out a side i had never seen. this smile that a nervous boyfriend that a young girl brings home to meet her parents. he carries with him a book when he performs that he claims has "only everything" in its contents, including the story of a woman eating a bicycle. with three performances in one day, his contribution meant a lot. especially his hank williams number.

IF i look at myself trying to teach how to make paper while teaching myself simutaneously, i can gather the whole weekend in one moment. it is the duality of learning where students are teachers and teachers are students.
THIS IS THE STEP BY STEP PICTURES FOR KIM:

ARCADE fire had an incredible set that i come to appreciate more and more as i edit the photos. these muscians had this picturesque spirituality that i wasn't able to capture until after they played a slow song, sung by the lead singer on accoustic in such contrast to diverse arrangents of all their over songs. this set was musical chairs in the literal sense that was styled as a novel. after each song, these performers would throw themselves up in the air, land with a different intrument in their hand and just begin playing like it was the instrument they had played with all along. they began drumming on eachothers helmut, covered heads. the sweat pushed out from the lyrical mouths with such a dynamic force, matching the rythms of the rembunkshious movements they made to make their sound. they took up the entire stage and when their presence became to confined for the stage, they left. the ended their show by dividing the crowd the way noah divided the red sea. they walked in single file down the split audience singing 'wake up' and continuing their musical march around the island. they really have a gift for making a large show seem intimate.

I made the mistake of only watching the main headliners. and worrying about getting good shots. so much to the point where i didn't enjoy any substance or relaxed coversation with my friends. i just realize too late that there is no such thing as mistakes here. any error i thought i might have made was really only an opportunity for improvement. either in editing later or in adjustment of mindframe.
the stars. they had a great brass section:

the shiftless rounders. wow, can they play the banjo:

ALTHOUGH the volunteers get a free admission into the festivities, the have to work extreemly hard and for long shifts. the security has to sit in the hot sun away from the island, the garbage pickers have to mow over a larger area of land early in the morning. the dishwashers are cleaning cutlery, plates and cups for 5,000 people and the setup/takedown crew work till 4am on the last night to put away all the equipment. a lot of them don't get too see the sets but they smile anyway. cheers to them.

THERE was workshops on palm reading, tatto art, belly dancing, craft making. the artisian market had about 20 tents of displayed creations. i bought a print off a man that manipulates still-wet polariods of shots he takes around his home in sudbury.

(his site was slow to load on my computer but the polariods have a bold canada meets van gogh look that is worth the wait)

THE festival put a huge emphasis on environmental awareness which i loved. the band shelter roof is their expiremental baby. i talked to cait about it. basically it acts as a filtration system. by putting grass on the roof to take out the heavy metals in rain water and the draining it back into the ground below through a stone-covered well.

(this is a site i found found off a link of the hillside site. it explains the roof technology. if you look in the projects link you can find guelph's previous mayor, Karen Farbridge and her house.)

KIM and i had a best hat of hillside photo thing going. i approached sam roberts asking if i could include him and his hat in the competition. he arrived a day early to just chill out. he was approachable, modest and nice.
cat: "hi i am taking pictures of the crazy hats of hillside for media. can i take your picture."
sam: "crazy hats of hillside! sure."
cat: "so are you volunteering here?"
sam: "no. i am here with my band"
cat: "oh nice. i am catherine"
sam "i am sam. nice to meet you"
i realized mid sentance that this was sam roberts. he didn't make me feel stupid that i didn't recognize him. he had fun on his set, inviting a whole wackload of bongoers to come up and join him for 'where have all the good people gone?"

I was too silly to say overnight in a tent so by the end the night, driving out of the island, something rare happend. the campers where making their way back to their site along the taking up the road, controlling the pace. there weren't any traffic lights and all the cars were forced to a crawl, waiting to move according to what the people let way for. people were the lights each of them sending out a sign to be read by another.

I love sarahslean3, fireglobeatartistanmarket, and stonestatuesatlakestage because:

Sarah Slean is so in love with her music.
That girl's positioning of her mouth. And she appears curious/almost-scared to touch the fire globe.
The angle and the water looks alive.
